“The Portugese Kid” performed April 8 & 9 and September 2 & 3 2022 at Mike’s Badhuistheater.

The Portuguese Kid by John Patrick Shanley is a witty and fast-paced romantic comedy set in Rhode Island. The play revolves around Atalanta, a feisty widow, and Barry, her bumbling lawyer, who has been handling her affairs since her husband’s death. Barry, despite being married to a much younger woman, still harbors a long-standing attraction to Atalanta, though their relationship is marked by playful insults and chaotic banter. As the story unfolds, past secrets, jealousy, and the characters’ tangled emotional lives come to the surface, blending sharp humor with deeper reflections on love, loss, and middle-age relationships. Shanley's clever dialogue and humorous exploration of human relationships make it an entertaining and thought-provoking piece.
